Week 3

Mum:

Once you have ovulated you have been exposed to sperm. When the egg implants some women have what is called implantation bleeding. This is very common and nothing to worry about. Your body also releases an immunosuppressant protein called Early Pregnancy Factor (EPF) to prevent your body from seeing the baby as a foreign body and reject it.

Baby:

The egg and the sperm will meet in your fallopian tube and will begin the 4-7 day journey to the uterus. Cell division begins immediately and continues throughout this journey. Once in the uterus, it will lie free until it attaches itself to the uterus wall. This is known as implantation and takes generally about 72 hours. Once implanted, your baby is called a blastocyst (a cluster of cells) and is about 0.150 mm in diameter, as big as a full stop! From here, development will start to take place at a very fast pace. In fact, although your baby is still so small, your baby’s sex has already been determined and the amniotic sac, amniotic cavity, placenta and the yolk sac are already forming.

Dad:

You are either unaware of what is going on at this point or you might be anxiously awaiting the results of the pregnancy test. Either way it is important to continue practicing good eating habits.
