Week 28

Mum:

By this time it is advisable to be knowledgeable about the options of pain relief during labour. During classes all these options are discussed and explained, in addition, your gynecologist may also answer any questions that you might have. At this stage, your breasts may leak colostrums, however if your breasts do not leak it does not mean that you cannot breastfeed. If you are Rh negative you should discuss this with your gynecologist since you may need a Rhogam shot.

Although a situation that no mom-to-be wants to experience; it is important to be aware of the signs of pre-term labour. Although not all these signs are related to preterm labour, it is important to be aware of them:

      • Pain in your upper abdomen
      • Burning sensation when you urinate
      • Lots of pelvic pressure
      • Leaking of fluid
      • Abnormal discharge or bleeding
Baby:

Up till now your baby’s eyelids have been fused shut, however now they will begin to open and in addition his/her lashes begin developing, as subcutaneous fat is deposited. Your baby looks alot like s/he will look at birth. However, the skin is quite wrinkled due to being constantly immersed in amniotic fluid.

Dad:

It is very vital to discuss birth plans with the mom-to-be since this will put both parties at ease.
